Games developer Cryptic Studios and publisher Atari have announced that the MMORPG Champions Online will soon be availabe as a free-to-play version, in addition to the existing premium option. John Needham, CEO of Cryptic Studios, said "Transitioning Champions Online to the free-to-play model is a great opportunity to reach a whole new audience of PC gamers that view subscription fees as a barrier to entry." The free version will have several features including unlimited game play, PvP combat, equipment crafting, base travel powers and fully customizable heroes.

The free-to-play version of Champions Online will go into the Closed Beta phase of testing on 9th November. A selection of existing players will be chosen to participate in the CBT, and opportunities for new players to participate should arise in the coming weeks.

In the client game you customize your own hero character, choosing from over 3,000 different costume pieces, designs and body types. Roam the universe of Champions Online and take on the lurking evil that threatens peace on earth.
